LLaMA 1 and LLaMA 2

Let’s delve into the world of large language models (LLMs) and explore the transition from LLaMA 1 to the more advanced LLaMA 2, considering its capabilities and potential for future development.

LLaMA 1 was introduced by Meta in February 2023, and it set the stage for subsequent models like LLaMA 2. Built on the transformer architecture, LLaMA 1 comprised four LLMs with varying model sizes, ranging from 7B to 65B parameters. Its training data, drawn from a vast array of publicly available online sources, included 1.4 trillion tokens, featuring data from Common Crawl, Github, and Wikipedia in multiple languages. However, one limitation it shared with other LLMs was the potential to generate incorrect information. LLaMA 1, designed for research purposes, was accessible only through a non-commercial licence, with researchers and developers required to apply for access.

Now, let’s shift our focus to LLaMA 2. Driven by the demand generated from over 100,000 requests for access to LLaMA 1, Meta unveiled LLaMA 2 in July 2023. A notable difference is that LLaMA 2 is available via a commercial licence and through providers such as Hugging Face, encouraging broader collaboration and applications.

LLaMA 2 offers an open-source model that includes model weights and starting code for pre-trained LLaMA variants. Notably, Meta introduced a fine-tuned model called LLaMA-2-chat, trained on over 1 million human annotations, primarily for chatbot applications.

In terms of its training process, LLaMA 2 shares much of the same model architecture and pre training as LLaMA 1. A major distinction is that LLaMA 2 incorporates reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), enhancing its conversational capabilities. It benefits from 40% more training data, amounting to 2 trillion tokens and doubled context length, while GPT-3 features 175B parameters. An emphasis on data privacy led to the exclusion of personal data sources, aligning with ethical guidelines.

Safety has been a central focus for Meta, and LLaMA 2 demonstrates significantly lower violation percentages compared to other LLMs, consistently staying below the 10% threshold. This remarkable safety record is a significant advancement, particularly when compared to closed-source models.

Analysing LLaMA 2’s performance in academic benchmarks, it may not outperform GPT-4, a powerful closed-source competitor. However, when placed in comparison with other open-source LLMs, LLaMA 2 shines with its exceptional performance.

LLaMA 2’s major advantages over its predecessor include improved training and performance, open-source availability for both commercial and non-commercial use, greater accessibility, and a range of resources for responsible use, including red-teaming exercises and a transparency schematic.

LLaMA 2’s enhanced adaptability, driven by expanded training data and better performance, opens doors to a multitude of applications. This includes content generation, personalised recommendations, and customer service automation.

As we look ahead, it’s reasonable to assume that Meta will continue its journey in the world of LLMs and possibly unveil LLaMA 3 in the future. Although LLaMA 2 doesn’t currently outperform GPT-4, Meta’s commitment to innovation and improvement suggests the potential for a more refined LLaMA model to emerge.
